Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Moshi

Your guide will meet you at Kilimanjaro Airport and take you to your accommodation near Moshi. You can rest from your journey and gather strength for the days ahead.

  2. Day 2

    Materuni

A hike through the green slopes of Kilimanjaro takes you to Materuni Waterfall. Afterwards you visit a coffee plantation and, on a tour, learn how the region's coffee is grown. In a traditional Chagga hut you sample the freshly brewed coffee; a village visit and a lunch of local specialities round off the day.

  3. Day 3

Moshi → Arusha National Park → Arusha

Your first game drive takes you into Arusha National Park around Mount Meru. Giraffes, buffalo and zebra graze on the open grasslands, while colobus monkeys and blue monkeys live in the montane forest. For your picnic lunch you stop at the Momella Lakes, on whose shores flamingos and other water birds gather. In the evening you drive to Arusha, where you spend the night.

  4. Day 4

    Arusha → Tarangire

Next you head to Tarangire National Park, whose savannah is characterised by massive baobabs and the Tarangire River. On the game drive you get close to elephant herds and buffalo; zebra and wildebeest are also on the move. With a bit of luck you will see lions near the river or a leopard resting on an acacia.

  5. Day 5

    Tarangire → Karatu

The day begins with another game drive in Tarangire National Park. Your guide keeps a lookout for the greater kudu and the fringe-eared oryx, two antelopes that are rare in the other parks of the north. After lunch you continue to Karatu on the edge of the Ngorongoro highlands, where you spend the night.

  6. Day 6

    Karatu → Serengeti

You leave Karatu and drive to the Serengeti, Tanzania's best-known national park. The plains open up, and even the drive to your accommodation becomes the first game drive in the park. Lions, elephants and giraffes live here, as do the large herds of wildebeest and zebra.

  7. Day 7

    Serengeti → Karatu

Once again you go on a game drive in the Serengeti, keeping a lookout for cheetahs on the open plains and leopards along the rivers. Afterwards you leave the park and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Karatu, where you spend the night. The next day you descend to the crater floor.

  8. Day 8

    Ngorongoro

Early in the morning you descend with your guide to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater and spend the day on a game drive. Between grassland, swamps and the alkaline lake, lions, buffalo, elephants and wildebeest live in close proximity, and the chances of seeing a black rhino are good. You have your picnic on the shore of the crater lake, then it is back to Karatu.

  9. Day 9

    Karatu → Zanzibar

Today the safari part of your trip comes to an end. Your guide takes you to the airport, from where you fly to Zanzibar on a domestic flight. You will be picked up at Zanzibar airport and taken to your hotel; the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish.

  10. Day 10

    Zanzibar

The first full day on Zanzibar belongs to the beach and the sea. You can swim in the Indian Ocean or rest after the safari days. Activities such as snorkelling off Kendwa are not part of the programme; if you wish, the team can book them for you at extra cost.

  11. Day 11

    Zanzibar

This day on Zanzibar is also at your leisure. You can book an optional trip to Stone Town with its alleys and markets, or a spice tour to the gardens of Zanzibar, where vanilla and cinnamon grow.

  12. Day 12

    Zanzibar

Your last full day on Zanzibar is at your leisure. You can book a boat trip on a traditional dhow, snorkelling around Mnemba Island or kitesurfing on the beach at Paje separately.

  13. Day 13

    Zanzibar

Your trip ends with breakfast on the beach. A transfer takes you to Zanzibar airport, from where you board your return flight. You return home with memories of the parks of northern Tanzania and the island.

Nkoaranga Orphanage

The Nkoaranga orphanage at the foot of Mount Meru has existed since 1997; around 30 children up to the age of three live there with 12 carers. Instead of a fixed contribution, Wildfinder Safaris regularly buys supplies for the orphanage: groceries, toiletries and similar items.

WildlifeNOW

WildlifeNOW is a Kora Project programme at Mkomazi National Park: it protects black rhinos and African wild dogs, maintains their populations through breeding and safeguards the ecosystem. It also raises awareness in the surrounding communities, and Wildfinder Safaris supports the programme.
