Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arusha

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, your guide welcomes you and drives you to Arusha, giving you a first impression of northern Tanzania along the way. At your accommodation you rest before the safari begins the next morning.

  2. Day 2

    Arusha → Karatu

In the morning you leave Arusha and drive with your guide to Karatu. The route passes villages and open savannah on the way to the region around the Ngorongoro Crater. Karatu is your starting point for the descent into the crater the next day. You spend the rest of the day at your accommodation.

  3. Day 3

    Ngorongoro

Early in the morning you descend with your guide to the crater floor and spend the whole day on a game drive. Grassland, swamps and an alkaline lake provide a habitat for one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. You can watch lions, elephants, buffalo and wildebeest, with a good chance of also seeing a black rhino. Depending on the water level, flamingos gather at the lake, and hippos lie in the swamps.

  4. Day 4

    Karatu → Ndutu

After breakfast you drive on from Karatu to Ndutu in the southern Serengeti. The vast, open grasslands of the south provide room for large herds in the rainy season; from January to March the wildebeest calve here. With a bit of luck you will already see cheetahs hunting on the open plains along the way. In the evening you reach your accommodation in Ndutu.

  5. Day 5

    Ndutu

You spend the whole day on a game drive in Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. Your guide takes you to the herds of wildebeest and zebras that move through the plains on their Great Migration. Where the herds are, predators are often not far away. With a bit of luck you will watch lions or cheetahs hunting.

  6. Day 6

    Ndutu

This day is also all about game drives in Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. The animals are particularly active in the early morning and late afternoon, so the drives take place then. From January to March you will see many newborn wildebeest among the herds. Because you have two full days in the region, your guide can adapt the route to follow the animals wherever they are.

  7. Day 7

    Central Serengeti

You drive on from Ndutu to the central Serengeti and spend the whole day on a game drive. Around Seronera, river valleys, acacia landscapes and striking rock formations alternate, and the area has plentiful wildlife all year round. You can watch lions and giraffes and, with a bit of luck, also a leopard by the rivers or rocks.

  8. Day 8

    Central Serengeti → Zanzibar

In the morning the safari ends and you fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar. At the airport you will be picked up and taken to your hotel on the beach. The rest of the day is free for a first walk on the beach and a look at the Indian Ocean.

  9. Day 9

    Zanzibar

The first full day on Zanzibar is for the beach. You swim in the Indian Ocean, rest in the shade of the palm trees and get used to the island's slower pace. Activities such as snorkelling or other excursions are not part of the programme; if you wish, the team can book them for you at extra cost.

  10. Day 10

    Zanzibar

This day is also yours to spend as you like. You can book an optional trip to Stone Town through the old town alleys and across the markets, or a visit to the spice gardens with vanilla and cinnamon.

  11. Day 11

    Zanzibar

The day is free; you can simply stay on the beach and let it wind down. Snorkelling or diving around the Mnemba Island reserve can be booked separately.

  12. Day 12

    Zanzibar

This day is also yours to spend as you like. You can book optional water sports such as kitesurfing or sailing, and a boat trip on a traditional dhow. Or you can swim and try the local cuisine with fresh fish, curries and tropical fruit.

  13. Day 13

    Zanzibar

The last full day on Zanzibar is yours to spend as you wish. Enjoy it on the beach or book another excursion on the island; it will be charged separately. In the evening you pack your bags for the journey home.

  14. Day 14

    Zanzibar

On the last day, a transfer takes you to Zanzibar airport. This is where your journey home begins. Two weeks in Tanzania come to an end: safari in the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, followed by beach days on Zanzibar.

The Nkoaranga orphanage at the foot of Mount Meru has existed since 1997; around 30 children up to the age of three live there with 12 carers. Instead of a fixed contribution, Wildfinder Safaris regularly buys supplies for the orphanage: groceries, toiletries and similar items.
