Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arusha

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, your guide will be waiting for you and will take you to Arusha. Arusha is the starting point of your safari through northern Tanzania. After checking in at your accommodation, there is time to rest and settle in.

  2. Day 2

    Arusha → Tarangire

In the morning you drive with your guide from Arusha to Tarangire National Park. Mighty baobabs and the Tarangire River shape the landscape of the park. On the first game drive you can see herds of elephants, buffalo, zebras and giraffes and, with a bit of luck, a lion.

  3. Day 3

    Tarangire

You have a full day in Tarangire National Park. You follow the Tarangire River, the most important water source in the region, where large herds of elephants gather in the dry season. With a bit of luck you will also see a greater kudu or a fringe-eared oryx; both species are rare in the other parks of the north.

  4. Day 4

    Tarangire → Karatu

After two days in Tarangire, you continue to Karatu. The town lies in the region around the Ngorongoro Crater and is the starting point for the descent into the crater the next morning. The rest of the day is yours to relax.

  5. Day 5

    Ngorongoro

In the morning you descend with your guide into the Ngorongoro Crater and spend the whole day on the crater floor. Between grassland, patches of woodland and swamps you will see lions, buffalo, elephants and hippos; depending on the water level, flamingos gather at the alkaline lake. The chances of seeing a black rhino are also good here.

  6. Day 6

    Karatu → Central Serengeti

From Karatu you drive on to the central Serengeti. Around Seronera, river valleys, acacia landscapes and striking rock formations alternate; this area is home to abundant wildlife all year round. The journey there already doubles as a game drive, and you head out again in the afternoon, looking out for lions and cheetahs.

  7. Day 7

    Central Serengeti

A full day of game drives in the central Serengeti lies ahead of you. You set off early in the morning and head out again in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and the animals become active. With a bit of luck you will see lions, leopards along the rivers and cheetahs on the open plains.

  8. Day 8

    Central Serengeti → Western Serengeti

Today you drive through the Serengeti to the Western Corridor in the west of the park. The region is characterised by denser vegetation and several river systems. The drive is also a game drive; along the way you can see elephants, giraffes, herds of buffalo and zebras.

  9. Day 9

    Western Serengeti

You have two full days in the western Serengeti. Depending on the season, the herds of wildebeest and zebras move through the Western Corridor, and your guide takes you on a game drive to wherever they are at the time. Predators such as lions and hyenas follow the herds; with a bit of luck you will see them hunting.

  10. Day 10

    Western Serengeti

The second day in the Western Corridor is dictated entirely by the movements of the herds. Hippos and Nile crocodiles live along the region's rivers, and wildebeest and zebras also come to the water. Your guide chooses the route of the game drives according to where the herds currently are.

  11. Day 11

    Western Serengeti

Today it is time to say goodbye to the Serengeti. From Grumeti Airstrip you fly back to Arusha; from there a transfer takes you to Kilimanjaro Airport. This is where your trip ends and you board your flight home.

Can I switch accommodation?

Yes. The accommodation on this route is a suggestion; the team in Arusha will happily swap individual lodges or camps for others. The level can also be adjusted, from Classic through Premium to Exclusive.

The Nkoaranga orphanage at the foot of Mount Meru has existed since 1997; around 30 children up to the age of three live there with 12 carers. Instead of a fixed contribution, Wildfinder Safaris regularly buys supplies for the orphanage: groceries, toiletries and similar items.
