Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arusha

Your trip begins at Kilimanjaro Airport. Your guide will be waiting there with the vehicle that will accompany you throughout the safari. A private transfer takes you to your accommodation in Arusha. There you recover from the journey, because your safari starts the next morning.

  2. Day 2

    Arusha → Karatu

After breakfast you leave Arusha and drive with your guide towards Karatu. The town lies close to the Ngorongoro Crater and is the starting point for your day in the crater. In the afternoon you reach your accommodation in Karatu and enjoy a quiet end to the day.

  3. Day 3

    Ngorongoro

Early in the morning you drive from Karatu to the Ngorongoro Crater and descend to the crater floor with your guide. Between grassland, swamps and the alkaline lake you spend the whole day on game drives. Lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras and wildebeest live here in large numbers, flamingos gather by the lake, and the chances of seeing a black rhino are good. In the late afternoon you drive back to Karatu.

  4. Day 4

    Karatu → Western Serengeti

After breakfast you set off with your guide towards the western Serengeti. The drive itself becomes a game drive: with a bit of luck you will see giraffes, zebras or elephants. The west of the Serengeti greets you with denser vegetation and several river systems. In the evening you reach your accommodation.

  5. Day 5

    Western Serengeti

Your first full day in the western Serengeti is devoted to the Great Migration. On game drives in the morning and afternoon you look for the herds of wildebeest and zebras that move through the west of the park over the course of the year. Your guide knows their current locations and takes you to the best viewing points.

  6. Day 6

    Western Serengeti

Today you follow the herds through the Western Corridor again. Hippos and Nile crocodiles live along the rivers, and leopards like to stay close to the water. With a bit of luck you will see wildebeest and zebras drinking at a river.

  7. Day 7

    Western Serengeti

Your last full day in the Serengeti gives you time to explore the plains of the Western Corridor. Cheetahs hunt on the open ground, lions roam the grassland, and elephants and buffalo herds are part of the picture. The birdlife is rich, from ostriches to martial eagles. In the evening you enjoy the vastness of the savannah once more.

  8. Day 8

    Western Serengeti → Zanzibar

In the morning you drive with your guide to Grumeti Airstrip and say goodbye to the Serengeti. Your domestic flight takes you straight from the savannah to Zanzibar. At Zanzibar airport you are picked up and taken to your hotel on the beach. The first evening on the island belongs to the beach.

  9. Day 9

    Zanzibar

The first full day on the island is free; you can stay on the beach and swim. A trip to Stone Town with its old town alleys, markets and historic buildings, or a spice tour to gardens with vanilla and cinnamon, is not part of the programme. If you wish, the team can book the excursion for you at extra cost.

  10. Day 10

    Zanzibar

Enjoy a free day on the beach at your hotel. You can book optional snorkelling or diving in the Indian Ocean, for example around the Mnemba Island reserve.

  11. Day 11

    Zanzibar

This is another free day. If you want to be active, you can book kitesurfing, sailing or a boat trip on a traditional dhow separately.

  12. Day 12

    Zanzibar

The day is free; you can stay on the beach. An excursion to the island's markets with local specialities can be booked on request. Fresh fish, spicy curries and tropical fruit characterise the island's cuisine.

  13. Day 13

    Zanzibar

Your last full day on Zanzibar belongs entirely to the beach. You can swim in the warm water, walk along the shore or simply enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean. In the evening you look back on the trip: Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and the sea.

  14. Day 14

    Zanzibar

Depending on your departure time, you will still have some time on the beach in the morning. A transfer takes you to Zanzibar airport, where your journey home begins. The memories of the crater, the Serengeti and the island travel home with you.

The team in Arusha will put the route together to suit your plans. For planning your days in the western Serengeti, the guide Great Migration in the Serengeti is a useful reference, as it explains which part of the Serengeti the herds are in over the course of the year.

Can I switch accommodation?

Yes, you can change accommodation and choose the category yourself: Classic, Premium or Exclusive. The team in Arusha will suggest suitable lodges and hotels for Karatu, the western Serengeti and Zanzibar; in the Classic category, you stay for the nights in the west in accommodation in the central Serengeti, very close by, as the accommodation in the west is in the Premium or Exclusive category.
