Seven routesFrom 6 to 9 days, moderate to very demanding, accommodation in huts or tents.
No climbing skills requiredYou hike on trails, not on rock. Fitness matters, climbing technique does not.
Five climate zonesFrom tropical rainforest through heath and alpine desert to the glacier region.
Focus on acclimatisationLonger routes and walking slowly give your body time to adjust to the altitude.
On the way to Uhuru Peak you cross five climate zones: from tropical rainforest through heath and alpine desert to the glacier region. The start is warm, the summit night icy.
You do not need technical climbing skills, but you do need a basic level of fitness and stamina for long trekking days. More important than pace is acclimatisation: longer routes give your body time for the altitude. The overview of the Kilimanjaro routes shows which route suits your fitness and your time frame. The page Kilimanjaro National Park introduces the altitude zones, the wildlife and the park fees.

Routes to Uhuru Peak
The seven routes compared: duration from 6 to 9 days, huts only on the Marangu Route, tents otherwise. Prices are per person and depend on the number of people. On request, you can stay overnight at Upper Barafu Camp instead of Barafu Camp; the team will factor this into the quote.
Which route suits you depends on your time, your fitness and the acclimatisation you want. The team in Arusha helps you with the choice. Marangu and Umbwe take 6 days. The 2019 version of the Wilderness Medical Society guideline classified very rapid ascents, such as a Kilimanjaro climb of less than 7 days, as high risk for altitude sickness. The 2024 version classifies risk according to sleeping altitude on the first day and the gain in sleeping altitude per day. More days give your body more time for the altitude.

“Our second trip to Tanzania took us to the mountains this time. We wanted to climb Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. The Wildfinder team worked out and planned this adventure perfectly. The crew around our chief guide Richard was exceedingly helpful and friendly. […] Everyone in the crew was concerned about our wellbeing […]. Even though we unfortunately did not reach the summit due to illness, it was a magnificent time […].”

“Our trip was divided into two parts, first the ascent of Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route and then just under a week of safari. […] Compared to other providers we had (on request) the luxury of camp beds and our own toilet tent, which was really worth a lot […]. The subsequent safari through Serengeti, Ndutu and Ngorongoro was simply incredible. […] That way we saw all of the Big Five […].”

“In Tanzania we saw everything we had hoped for in the various national parks and can recommend Wildfinders and Tanzania without reservation.”

Planned and guided by Wildfinder Safaris in Arusha
Wildfinder Safaris (Wildfinder Tours & Safaris Limited) plans private Tanzania safaris, Zanzibar stays and Kilimanjaro climbs. The tour operator, founded in 2018 by four Tanzanian and German partners, is based in Usa River near Arusha. The team works with guides, has access to 12 vehicles, is reachable locally during the trip and looks after guests in German, English and Spanish. Wildfinder Safaris holds TALA licence 033221 and is a member of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO).
Every trip with Wildfinder Safaris supports both projects in the region.
People · Mount Meru
Nkoaranga Orphanage
The Nkoaranga orphanage at the foot of Mount Meru has existed since 1997; around 30 children up to the age of three live there with 12 carers. Instead of a fixed contribution, Wildfinder Safaris regularly buys supplies for the orphanage: groceries, toiletries and similar items.
WildlifeNOW is a Kora Project programme at Mkomazi National Park: it protects black rhinos and African wild dogs, maintains their populations through breeding and safeguards the ecosystem. It also raises awareness in the surrounding communities, and Wildfinder Safaris supports the programme.
No, you do not need any technical climbing skills. You walk on paths, and a good basic level of fitness and stamina is enough. The biggest challenge is the altitude, which is why acclimatisation and a suitable route matter.
When are the dry seasons?
The dry months are January to early March and late June to September. The paths are then mostly dry and visibility is clear. The mountain can generally be climbed all year round.
How are you supported if you have altitude problems?
Your guides are trained in dealing with altitude sickness and monitor your condition. If symptoms occur, they respond immediately and, in an emergency, organise a rapid descent.
What accommodation is there on the mountain?
Only on the Marangu Route do you sleep in permanent mountain huts. On all other routes you spend the night in tents.
What food does the team provide?
The team cooks for you: breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered throughout the tour. You also receive filtered and boiled water.
How long does the ascent take on summit night?
Allow 6 to 8 hours for the night-time ascent to Uhuru Peak. It is cold and the air is thin. This section is the toughest of the tour.
