In short

If you would like an English-speaking guide, you will get one, at no extra charge.

At Wildfinder Safaris, your safari is led exclusively by the company’s own certified guides from the team in Arusha. Every safari is a private safari: your own vehicle, your own guide, your own route, no other travellers. Your guide collects you at Kilimanjaro Airport and accompanies you in the same vehicle for the whole trip.

Meet the Wildfinder guides

The guides are permanent members of the team in Arusha. Including the guides, the team comprises around 20 people, covering travel advice, reservations and marketing. The company has 12 of its own vehicles available for the safaris. Each of them is serviced before every safari and carries a spare tyre.

The guides are certified local guides. Some of them have 10 to 20 years of experience. The team trains younger guides itself: they receive regular personal on-site training from Francis and clear guidelines so that they are particularly service-orientated and courteous. New guides first complete internal seminars with Francis to get to know the Wildfinder culture and the team’s understanding of quality. The guides have specialised in various languages; together they cover 5 languages: German, English, Spanish, French and Italian. For other languages, an English-speaking guide usually travels with you.

On site, Francis coordinates the guides, vehicles and transfers. He was a guide himself for many years, but no longer works as one. You can read more about the founding team on the page about Wildfinder.

Each safari vehicle has 6 window seats. If you travel with more people, a second vehicle with a personal guide comes along. The comparison private safari or group safari shows how a private safari differs from a group safari.

Who is allowed to work as a guide in Tanzania

In Tanzania, the Tourism Act regulates who may work as a tour guide. Working without registration is prohibited.

For registration, the law sets several requirements:

  • Tanzanian citizenship
  • minimum age of 21 years
  • at least an O-Level school leaving certificate, i.e. a secondary school qualification
  • a valid first aid certificate
  • sufficient knowledge of the area and the subject

Some obligations remain after registration. Registered guides undergo an annual medical examination, follow the rules of the relevant authority and use approved routes. For each protected area, the guide additionally needs a separate permit, i.e. authorisation from the local authority, such as the park administration.

Only Tanzanian citizens may work as guides. This is already stated in the Tourism Act. In addition, Government Notice No. 487A of 28 July 2025 expressly lists tour guiding as an activity prohibited for non-citizens (as of October 2026). Foreign tour leaders accompanying a group from abroad are classed as Foreign Tour Leaders and may not work as guides in Tanzania. According to the TATO association, they may neither drive nor take on the tasks of a tour guide, but may only provide logistical support at airports and hotels.

The full text of the law can be found in the Tourism Act (PDF, in English).

Where guides learn their trade

The National College of Tourism (NCT) is the only state tourism college on the Tanzanian mainland. It is run by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The college offers a Certificate in Tour Guiding Operations, and the curriculum includes foreign language modules in French. Details are given in the NCT prospectus (PDF, in English).

The College of African Wildlife Management in Mweka trains at 3 levels: Basic Technician Certificate, Technician Certificate and Ordinary Diploma in Tour Guiding Operations, plus a short course for mountain guides. The admission requirement is a good command of spoken and written English, and teaching is in English. The college also offers a short course called “French and German Languages Course”. More information is on the programme page of the college in Mweka.

Clarify the language in advance

State your language preference directly in the enquiry. The enquiry form takes around 3 minutes, and you are not committed to anything until you book. You will receive a proposal with route, accommodation and price per person within 24 hours.

Travel advice before your trip is provided in German, English and Spanish. This means you can clarify questions about the guide, the route and the schedule in your own language before anything is finalised.

During your trip, the local team in Arusha is available.

Nkoaranga Orphanage

The Nkoaranga orphanage at the foot of Mount Meru has existed since 1997; around 30 children up to the age of three live there with 12 carers. Instead of a fixed contribution, Wildfinder Safaris regularly buys supplies for the orphanage: groceries, toiletries and similar items.
